The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
