A defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a issue in all modern cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any car, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This broader defence situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in every areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
