In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
