2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Lukewarm Response
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president a key figure informed staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined vision.
The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full message from the president's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a clearer identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the feedback to heart and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of talks, Ben officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the months to come.
David
Background of the New Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Take on the competition with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every match. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is yours."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can anticipate further news as production continues.
